[Intro]
You are in a state of complete relaxation
You know, if you can wake up, you should
Because you know someday, you know you won't be able to
So just, um...
But it's easy, you know just...
Wake up
This is Wayne [?]
[?] those windows now
Simpler than a phonographic [?]
From now on, you will hear...
What I want you to hear
Woah!
Was I dreadful?
Not at all! You have a very unique style
Yeah, it's—
I'm not an engineer
And you're no cutie
I wanna go back to the blue room
People um... say
That acid causes um... brain damage
But um... What did you say?
Hello, my needle drops
Anthony Fantano here
The internet's busiest music nerd
And it's time for a review
sulP hsotnicaM ,sulP hsotnicaM
Floral Shoppe
(ycerM)
Macintosh Plus is the pseudonym
Of a music producer from America
And Macintosh Plus' latest release
Along with a few others
Are currently being celebrated
As the dawning of a brand new genre
And yes, I understand if you're skeptical
Given the inconsistency
Of the last three new genres that we've had
Like Seapunk
Witch House
And Chillwave
But this new genre is vaporwave
Vapor, wave
Vaporwave
Vapor wah
Vapor wah
Vapor wah
(Nmesh, Nmesh)
haw ropaV
Yes, it does sound ridiculous
However
Let's not slag a piece of music simply because of the term thrown onto it
Because some music fans or music writers are desperate to feel like they're on the cutting edge of something
If vaporwave is in fact a genre and does end up being...
erneg a sa ylsuoires dezingoceR
However, I'm being told that the artists
That are falling under this category of vaporwave
Are stylistically different from guys like DJ Shadow
(Then, it's- it's most likely going to just become a subgenre of Plunderphonics
Sample-based compositions, songs that take pieces of other songs to build those songs)
Avalanches
Negativland
Girl Talk
From guys like DJ Shadow
As well as John Oswald who coined the word plunderphonics
And I guess primarily what makes vaporwave different
From other, other-other plunderphonics styles is its source material
(There's nobody here...)
Many projects in this genre of music that are...
...lebal pmacdnaB guR ehT nO reeB eht no dnuof ylbaton tsoM
Stick pretty passionately to...
...morf ,cisum latnedicni ,zzaJ htoomS morf selpmas gnisU
Maybe commercials, television shows from the late 80's, late 90's
Contemporary R&B, maybe even adult oriented rock
New age music and synth-funk as well
Like the kind of sounds that Brian Eno was creating for Windows
Back when he was creating the "Windows" sound
The "Windows" sound
And maybe it's music that you've had contact with if you've watched funny videos or TV commercials on "Everything Is Terrible"
(you’ve been smoking)
We have to do everything possible to make sure nothing weird happens
Angel, please don't go
If you're at all familiar with those last two things
You know that this kind of music is constantly made a joke of by a lot of people
However, there is a growing post-ironic desire to listen to and wholeheartedly enjoy this kind of music
Which is just the weirdest thing to me
Not that it's not enjoyable
But it's funny that in the internet age
You can pretty much find and listen to anything
And-and-and-
And almost anything can find an audience
And, and, and, and
...Girl, you got that sleeping pill
Had me in a coma all night (Bottom of the ocean)
So gone that I— girl, it feels like (Swimming in slow motion)
I just took a sleeping pill
Girl, you got that sleeping pill
Had me in a coma all night (Bottom of the ocean)
So gone that I— girl, it feels like (Swimming in slow motion)
I just took a sleeping pill
Girl, you got that sleeping pill...
Girl, you got that sleeping pill...
Girl, you got that sleeping pill...
Girl, you got that sleeping pill...
And there are plenty of other artists
That have made use of the sounds that vaporwave consists of
For their own musical gain
Artists like Neon Indian for example
Maybe Ariel Pink as well
And, and, and, and
Especially an artist like James Ferraro now
This is it, man
This is what your grandchildren are going to be smoking
Future, the future (the future, the future)
(erutuf eht ,erutuf ehT)
The future, the future
It's your move
Smooth, synth-heavy, kind of sexy (sexy, sexy...)
The second track on here is a slowed down version of
Diana Ross' - "Your Move"
"Your Move"
"Your Move"
"Your Move"
Hello, my needle drops ("Your Move")
Hello, my needle drops ("Your Move")
Hello, my needle drops ("Your Move")
Hello, my needle drops ("Your Move")
With a few choice grooves in the song cut and looped
Over and over and over and over
And over and over and over and over
And over and over and over and over
And over and over and over and over
And over and over...
If you've given this a listen
What did you think of it?
Did you love it?
Hate it?
Why?
What should I review next?
And (that's what we're thinking, Dan) that's it
[Outro]
Did you ever find Bugs Bunny attractive when he put on a dress and played a girl bunny?
No
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
No
Neither did I
I was just asking
