Let's go
We're back
Round two
Confirmation biases: we select info that confirms our views
Social media have algorithms that they use
They check our browser history and statuses too
Making it all relative to you (ay)
Negative biases comparing between
You and your friends online impacts
Self concept and esteem
Self-concept means your own belief
Bout what you’re like your attributes
No emotions
No judgment
Unlike self esteem:
What’s your worth? how do you feel?
Are you happy bout yourself?
Maybe put your phone down and you’ll figure it out
Social comparison theory uh-huh it came about
Back in ‘54, so how do we evaluate ourselves?
People compare themselves to those around them
Seeing posts then working out
Who they are
How they feel
We might compare our feelings and abilities
To judge our own place in society
But when you deem the experience better than your own
Keep in mind you're looking at a scenario
So the dopest thing that they chose to post
And there’s so much more that you don’t know
And social media sites, just intensify how much you compare yourself to what you see online
Comparing yourself to people you think are cool
(Big T) Man…. I wish I was still in that group
Shakya and Christakis in two thousand seventeen
They found a negative correlation between
Liking people's posts and their mental well being
But the bidirectional ambiguity
Does Facebook impact your mental well being?
Do you use it more just because of how your feelin'?
These upward comparisons seem to be
Impacting people's self esteem
As negative biases can increase
Look up from your phone and you will see!
