[Verse 1]
I'm back from the dead, from the back of my head
Been gone and facin' horrors that should never be said
The wrath of the grit from the pit of despair
Been takin' every whip and word, I've never been spared
[Pre-Chorus]
They say tomorrow's never promised, honest
Yeah, they say that angels are among us
[Chorus]
Lock me up in a maze (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
Turn out, turn out the lights (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
I was born, I was raised for this (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
Turn out the lights
Lock me up inside a cage
Just throw away the key, don't worry about me
Drivin' in my car, throwin' up my hands, put it in coast
[Post-Chorus]
I could do this with my eyes closed
Turn out, turn out the lights
I could do this with my eyes closed
Turn out, turn out the lights
[Verse 2]
Less medication, less manifestations
Mantras, meditation, throw it all away
All the places I've been, all the blood that I've bled
I've been broken down and beat up but I still get ahead
All the faceless embraces and the tasteless two faces
Killed and resurrected 'cause I'll never be dead
[Pre-Chorus]
They say tomorrow's never promised, honest
Yeah, they say piranhas are among us
[Chorus]
Lock me up in a maze (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
Turn out, turn out the lights (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
I was born, I was raised for this (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
Turn out, turn out the lights (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
Lock me up inside a cage (Oh, oh-oh)
Just throw away the key, don't worry 'bout me
I was drivin' in my car, throwin' up my hands, put it in coast
[Post-Chorus]
I could do this with my eyes closed
Now turn out, turn out the lights
I could do this with my eyes closed
Turn out, turn out the lights
[Bridge]
And when the day broke, buried in violence
Somethin' made my mind up
I will spend these days as an island
Alone and far away
[Chorus]
Lock me up in a maze (Oh, oh-oh)
Now turn out, turn out the lights (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
I was born, I was raised for this (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
Turn out, turn out the lights (Oh, oh, oh-oh)
Lock me up inside a cage (Oh, oh-oh)
Just throw away the key, don't worry 'bout me
Drivin' in my car, throwin' up my hands, put it in coast
[Post-Chorus]
I could do this with my eyes closed
Turn out, turn out the lights
I could do this with my eyes closed
Now turn out, turn out the lights
I could do this with my eyes closed
[Spoken: Dan Reynolds, Wayne Sermon, crowd]
Thank you, merci
Uh, one of my favorite bands growing up was uh
Well, I had a lot of favorite bands but two of them that I really, really loved
One was Weezer
I felt that Weezer had these songs that were very serious at times
And then, sometimes like, serious but tongue-in-cheek like you were in on joke
And there was sarcasm, and there was interesting, uh, humor
But a lot of the times if you actually read the lyrics they were pretty serious
So it was this juxtaposition of humor and like uh, dark humor and- but serious
Anyway
The point is, I’m not a very humorous person
So I tried to uh, (laughing) tried to write a song every once in a while that comes from a light place
And then it always ends up if you read the lyrics being dark
But I think this song’s a happy song
Oh yeah
Right? Do you hear it as happy?
I do
No, be honest
I do
You do?
Yeah
We don’t really talk about these things very much
We should do this more
We should do this every day
Let’s check in with each other
Okay
I- you don’t think it’s happy?
Mmm
Mixed feelings
Let’s sing it, and then we’ll have them decide if it’s happy or not
Okay, you should teach it
Oh yeah, yeah, do you want to sing a part with me?
It’s a very simple part- Okay, I’ll show you
Make it happy, guys
Use your voices
Very easy, very easy, this is not a big ask- ‘kay, I’ll show you, I’ll show you [vocalizing]
Okay, so you’re gonna go
So the chorus goes (whispering)
So you’re gonna go- okay, I’m gonna go “take me to the beach”
And you’re gonna go “ah-ah-ah”
You can have the mountains (ah-ah-ah)
You take the snow (ah-ah-ah)
It’s way too cold (ah-ah-ah)
My- Not right there
That’s what this means [gesturing]
That’s the one place you don’t do it
There’s- no matter what, every time we play this song, there’s at least gonna three people that are gonna be like “ah-ah-ah” at that part
But it’s fine, ‘cause it’s a happy song, so it’s fine
Wayne still does it, y’know, but- (Yes I do)
So it goes- so-
Take me to the beach (ah-ah-ah)
You can have the mountains (ah-ah-ah)
You take the snow (ah-ah-ah)
It’s way too cold
My heart is cold enough (ah-ah-ah)
Push comes to shove (ah-ah-ah)
You can have the mountains (ah-ah-ah)
I’ll take the beach
That’s it, so- [vocalizing], nothing-nothing-nothing, [vocalizing], nothing-nothing-nothing
Okay (Alright)
You got that?
The power’s in your hands (Yep)
