How to Handle Duplicate Pages
Assessing DuplicatesEnsure that it is actually a song where we only want one page.
Choose the page to keep.Hiding a PageIt is often better to hide a duplicate page than to delete it.
Hide the bad page by clicking Admin and then Hide. Check the boxes for transcribers and editors.
A good habit is to edit the lyrics on the bad page to add a note at the top explaining why you hid the page and leave a link to the good page there. The note can literally just say something like: "Hidden because there is a better page [here](link to better page)"Transferring InformationTitles: Make sure the remaining page has the right title.
• In general, we want the title to match how it is in Apple Music
• If the bad page is occupying the correct title, change the title of the bad page by appending something like "(duplicate)" or "(dupe)"
• It's often good that the good page's title and artist listing both get changed to the bad page's version for a bit and then the change gets (manually) reverted. This helps with SEO, according to @timoo!
Lyrics: There may be minor differences in the transcriptions of the two pages. Consider using a text comparison tool in order to compare the lyrics in case the bad page had a few differences that were actually better. Two such tools are here:
- https://www.diffchecker.com/
Metadata: You can also compare various metadata bits to make sure the remaining page has all the best metadata, but this is also somewhat optional.
Knowledge: You can also try transferring over any good knowledge in annotations and Q&A, but do not plagiarize.
