I met a priest
At the pearly gates
He said, “I should be excited
But I don’t feel that great”
I made a joke about communion
How it must have been something he ate
You work your life
To get to a place
Then when you get there
You can’t remember why you came
It could be Heaven
It could be a pool in Pacific Palisades
I never liked the Bible that much
But I liked helping people
And thе Bible was
A pretty good crutch
Yeah, thе congregation looks at you
With so much trust
You had a vision you were chosen
What if it’s you who chose yourself?
There are some things that go unspoken
There are some things that must be felt
We met a learned man
And boy did he hate
Waiting in line with a singer
And a priest looking lost in the face
Heaven’s a good debate
Somebody wins and somebody else feels ashamed
So we walked up
To Saint Peter to say
“Is there a god in Heaven?”
“No God’s down there in the everyday
If you give up looking
God’s beneath that thing you can’t explain”
So we waltzed right through
Heaven’s gate
There was a saltwater pool
And a catered area backstage
But between me and you
We took the elevator back down to the everyday
Yeah between me and you
I guess it was an escalator
Back down to the everyday
