When Mariame Kaba Speaks Listen
[Verse 1]
I tell people that our criminal punishment system is racist;
That it's classist
That it's sexist
That it's transphobic and that it's more

[Verse 2]
I tell people that we spend a lot of money on locking people up in our country- too much money on locking people up in our country:
Seventy Billion Dollars to be exact- every single year, to lock people up in our country
And that doesn't include all of the attendant money that we spend on police and on other kinds of criminal-legal, criminal-punishment-focused things that don't involve prisons

[Verse 3]
We lock up too many pеople:
For too long
And for too many things that people should not bе locked up for
And so that even with all of that happening
We're still a country that lives with fear- always a lot of fear
And also a country that still feels unsafe even though we lock up two point four million people in our country
