The Great American Novel
[Verse 1]
I was born and raised an orphan
In a land that once was free
In a land that poured its love out on the moon
And I grew up in the shadows
Of your silos filled with grain
But you never helped to fill my empty spoon
[Verse 2]
And when I was ten you murdered law
With your courtroom politics
And you learned to make your lie sound just like truth
But I know you better now
And I will never fall for all your tricks
You have lost the one advantage of my youth
[Verse 3]
You killed a black man at midnight
Just for talking to your daughter
Then you made his wife your mistress
And you left them without water
And the sheet you wore upon your face
Was the sheet your children slept on
Every meal time you say a little prayer
You do not believe but still you're gonna keep on
[Chorus]
And your money says in God we trust
It's against the law to pray in a school
You say we beat the Russians to the moon
And I say you starved children to do it
[Verse 4]
We're all halfway across the ocean now
In wars that aren't our own
And once we're winning theirs
We're gonna lose the one at home
Do we really think that the only way
To bring about some peace
Is to sacrifice those children
And kill all our enemies?
[Verse 5]
Politicians, they make their speeches
And the news men take their notes
They will exaggerate false issues
Before they shove it down our throats
Is it really up to them then
If this country sinks or floats?
And I wonder who would lead us there
If none of us would vote
[Verse 6]
And my lips are chapped and my phone is tapped
I'm just whispering through the fence
You know every move I make
Or was that just coincidence?
So you promise to make my life
Just a little less like jail
If I promise to make tapes and slides
And send them by email
[Chorus]
Yeah, your money says in God we trust
It's against the law to pray in a school
And you say we beat the Russians to the moon
Yeah, well I say you starved millions to do it
You say all men are equal, baby, all men are brothers
Then why are the rich more equal than the others?
Don't ask me for answers, I've only found one
A man leaves his darkness when he follows the Son
